Alabama’s forestry community takes an active role in sustainable forestry practices, from the stump (landowner and loggers) all the way to mill (forest products companies), through their commitment to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI®), Tree Farm and Professional Logging Manager (PLM) programs. The programs' standards are focused on issues such as reforestation, soil conservation, water quality, endangered species, biological diversity and aesthetics. Compliance to the standards are vital to mills in Alabama that market their forest products to businesses like Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, etc. whose customers are becoming more environmentally conscious.
Approximately 2.5 million acres of forestlands in Alabama are certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s standard. These lands are owned and/or managed by forest product companies, timber management organization (TiMO) and real estate investment trusts (REIT).
Tree Farm Program The Tree Farm Program promotes the sustainable management of the thousands of family family forests in Alabama. To date, there are approximately 1,400 tree farms, amounting to over 2.2 million acres, that are certified to the American Tree Farm System’s standard.
Professional Logging Manager
Almost 2,000 individuals have been trained to the Professionsal Logging Manager (PLM) standard. PLM courses focus on Alabama’s Best Management Practices, safety in the woods and on the road and good business practices.
